Amrut Fusion is an Indian single malt made at Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore. It blends 75% unpeated Indian barley with 25% peated Scottish Highland barley (about 8–10 ppm). Both are distilled separately, matured in ex‑bourbon barrels for around four to five years, then married for a few months in American oak and virgin oak, bottled at 50% ABV. It is non‑chill filtered and carries its natural colour. In the glass, it pours a light golden hue. On the nose: gentle peat smoke, fruit (pear, apple, citrus), vanilla and barley sugar. The palate is full-bodied with creamy texture flavours of caramel, citrus peel, walnut, dark chocolate, tobacco and earthy smoke. The finish is long, smoky, and slightly briny, with dried fruit and oak lingering. Acclaimed by Jim Murray naming it third best whisky in the world in 2010.

Amrut

Amrut is a whisky distillery located in Bangalore, India. It was founded in 1948 and originally produced Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) before switching to producing single malt whisky in 2004. Amrut single malt whiskies are made using locally sourced Indian barley and pure Himalayan mountain water. They are aged in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon, virgin oak and sherry casks. Amrut's core range includes expressions like the Amrut Fusion, which is a blend of Indian and Scottish barley, and the Amrut Cask Strength, which is bottled at cask strength without chill filtering. One interesting fact about Amrut is that their whisky was initially met with skepticism in the global whisky community due to the fact that it was produced in India, a country not typically associated with whisky production. However, the quality of their whisky soon earned them numerous awards and accolades, helping to put Indian single malt whisky on the map.

About the Amrut Fusion

Amrut Fusion is a no age‑statement Indian single malt whisky crafted by Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore, India. It was first released in 2009 and has since become one of the most recognised Indian malts worldwide. In 2010, whisky writer Jim Murray rated Fusion the third best whisky in the world, and in 2019 it earned World Whisky of the Year at the Bartender Spirits Awards. The whisky is made by distilling two mash bills separately: 75% Indian malted barley (unpeated) and 25% Scottish peated Highland barley (~8–10 ppm). Each is aged in ex‑bourbon barrels for about 4–5 years in India's hot climate, which accelerates maturation. After primary ageing, the whiskies are married and rested together in American oak barrels and virgin oak casks for a brief finishing period before bottling at 50% ABV, with no colouring and no chill filtration. In the glass, Fusion offers a pale golden colour. On the nose, expect subtle smoke over fruit—pear, apple, citrus—alongside barley sugar, vanilla, and light spice. Over time it opens with tropical fruit notes like banana and guava, plus chocolate and toffee. The palate is creamy and vibrant, with peat smoke balanced by caramel, honey, lemon peel, walnut, dark chocolate, dried fruit, tobacco and earthy oak. The mix of smoke and fruit gives it a layered complexity. The finish runs long, with flavors of brine, lingering smoke, spice, and dried fruit fading into smoke-kissed oak. It is bold and structured for the strength. Amrut Fusion is ideal for drinkers curious about peat that is smoother than Islay but still present. This whisky works well neat or with a few drops of water to open its aromatics. It also performs admirably in cocktails like whisky Old Fashioned or a smoky sour. At a moderate price it delivers strong complexity and unique style outside traditional whisky regions.
