You will not find this bottle in your local shop. Aberlour made it for duty free counters. On the shelf it sits between the 12 and the 18. Fourteen of its fifteen years pass in ex-bourbon hogsheads and ex-sherry butts. The trick is a final twelve months in brand new Spanish Oloroso casks. Fresh sherry wood works quickly, and it shows. The whisky pours dark and tastes of raisins, almonds and vanilla, with a nutty sweetness that lingers. Nothing about it bites. Pour it neat and it opens into orange peel and gentle spice.

Aberlour

The Aberlour distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland and was founded in 1879 by James Fleming. The distillery draws its water from the nearby mountain, Ben Rinnes, which is known for its pure and soft water. Aberlour 15 years Double Cask Matured is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Chivas Brothers owns the distillery and bottles it at 40% ABV. Fifteen years of ageing sit behind the label. The name points at the maturation, which runs through more than one kind of cask. Expect a sherried Speyside malt, sweeter and darker than the region's lighter, floral style. Travel retail is where you find it. The maturation is the interesting part. Spirit rests for fourteen years in two separate cask types. Ex-bourbon hogsheads handle one portion and ex-sherry butts handle the other. The two are then married together and returned to wood. New Spanish Oloroso sherry casks carry the whisky through a final twelve months. Fresh casks give up their flavour fast, so that short last year does heavy work. Aromas arrive dark and fruity. Sherry leads, backed by dried fruit, raisins and sultanas. The palate turns softer and rounder. Vanilla from the bourbon wood sits under a nutty, malty weight. Almond notes build as the whisky fades. The finish stays nutty and sweet, with vanilla holding on longest. Nothing here is sharp, which is partly the low strength and partly the sherry. Orange peel shows up right at the end. Aberlour 15 years Double Cask Matured was built for travel retail, not the local shop. Chivas Brothers released it to sit alongside the 12, 16 and 18 year old bottlings and the A'bunadh. Its point of difference is the finishing cask. That means brand new Oloroso wood for the last twelve months. If you like sherried Speyside malts but want something calm rather than punchy, this is the one.
